🚨 PCE Inflation Hits 3.5% — Highest in Over a Year

PCE Price Index YoY: 3.5% vs 2.8% prior Core PCE YoY: 3.2% vs 3.0% prior Core PCE MoM: 0.3% (in line) Initial Jobless Claims: 189K vs 214K prior — labor market tight

This is the inflation warning shot of the week. PCE at 3.5% is the highest reading in over a year. The driver is energy — WTI at $104 is feeding through to transportation, goods, and services. The Fed cannot cut in this environment. Rate cuts are now pushed to Q4 at the earliest — and that’s if oil stabilizes.

Bond market read-through: Higher-for-longer is back. Utilities, REITs, homebuilders — all face renewed headwinds. TIPS and energy sector are the inflation hedges.

AAPL is the last Mag-7 print of the season. The headline article: “What Apple’s new CEO announcement signals ahead of earnings?” — a CEO change at Apple would be a seismic event. Watch for: Services revenue, China iPhone demand, AI (Apple Intelligence) adoption, and any leadership news.

Analyst Note

The morning is split-screen: AI euphoria vs inflation reality.

GOOGL +6.9% and AMZN +3.7% on the backs of last night’s blow-outs are pulling the S&P and Nasdaq higher. VIX is down 5.7%. The AI infrastructure thesis is fully validated.

But PCE at 3.5% is a cold shower. The inflation fire is not out — it’s being fanned by $104 WTI. The Fed cannot cut. Tight labor (189K claims vs 214K prior) plus oil inflation = Powell keeps rates elevated. Gold +2% to $4,650 is the market’s honest reaction.

The MSFT puzzle: MSFT beat on Azure (40%), Copilot (20M seats), revenue ($82.9B), and EPS ($4.27). Yet the stock is -3.34%. Why? Because Alphabet’s 63% Cloud growth makes MSFT’s 40% look pedestrian by comparison. The market is repricing relative AI positioning within Big Tech. Alphabet won Q1 2026 — it’s not close.

META -7.9%: When you strip the $8B tax benefit, Meta’s organic print was fine but not spectacular. More importantly, Meta raised capex without giving commensurate AI revenue guidance. Investors don’t want to fund the build — they want to see the monetization. Until Llama/Meta AI translate into ad pricing power beyond the current 33% revenue growth, the capex narrative will remain a drag.

Tonight AAPL is the season finale. Services momentum and any Apple Intelligence metrics are the key reads. The stock at $233 (implied pre-market) needs a clean beat + guidance raise to sustain the current level.

XOM is the only clean unencumbered BUY in the watchlist today. Energy exempted from the oil spike filter. CVX Kronos +0.587 remains the strongest directional signal in the cached model. The oil pullback from $108 to $104 is not a reversal — it’s a “Trump Iran options briefing” pause. The underlying supply disruption is unchanged.
