ANALYST NOTE
The consumer picture is bifurcating — and the market is pricing it in.
WMT −5%: mass market consumer is cautious, tariff-sensitive, gas-pressured. RL +10.8%: luxury consumer is spending freely — affluent households less exposed to tariffs. INTU −19%: even a beat isn’t enough if you’re cutting 17% of your workforce.
The INTU move deserves special attention. It’s not just about the layoffs — it’s about what those layoffs signal: AI is displacing knowledge workers at Intuit faster than the revenue from AI products is growing. The market is penalizing “efficiency through AI” because it implies near-term revenue risk, not just cost savings. This is a preview of how every tech company that announces AI-driven headcount reductions will trade.
Quantum computing names are running as high-beta AI proxies. Nothing fundamental changed overnight — they’re riding the NVDA sentiment wave. These are speculative positions, not fundamentals.
Oil back to Brent $108 is the macro villain today. The Iran de-escalation was short-lived. Watch for any new signals from the Gulf overnight.
Tonight: ROSS is the off-price retail read. If consumers are trading down (from WMT-tier to off-price), ROSS beats. If spending is broadly contracting, ROSS misses. This is the final consumer data point of earnings season.
